Documenting Life Before Three Becomes Four
Maternity photo session Northern Ireland | Family photo session Northern Ireland | Storytelling photography Northern Ireland | Documentary photography Northern Ireland
There’s something incredibly special about photographing a family just before everything changes. A maternity session with me isn’t only about documenting a growing bump, it’s about capturing the rhythm and routine of your family as you prepare to welcome someone new.
This family story session with mum, dad, and adventurous 2 year old Luca felt less like a photoshoot and more like an afternoon spent enjoying the sea.
A Relaxed Family-Led Maternity Session
Rather than posing or directing every moment, we approached this session documentary-style allowing the family to simply be together. The beach gave us endless space to play, wander, and explore naturally.
The little one spent most of the session happily moving (or running!) between building sandcastles, splashing through the sea, and collecting all the rocks he could find. Those toddler years are beautifully unpredictable, and documentary family photography creates space for that energy instead of trying to contain it.
There were sandy hands, wet clothes, bursts of laughter, and moments where everyone simply slowed down together.
Capturing the Feeling of This Chapter
One of my favourite images from the session was taken at the water’s edge as the family walked together. The reflections in the wet sand created this soft, almost dreamlike scene of this family of three soon to be four.
It’s the kind of image that says more about a family than any perfectly posed portrait ever could.
Another favourite was a close-up photograph of mum’s bump while dad and toddler played behind her. I love how this image quietly tells the story of transition, the focus on the baby soon to arrive, while everyday family life continues around it. It feels calm, intimate, and full of anticipation.
But most of all I love how the full gallery of images tells a simple, beautiful story of this family on their day at the beach, a little slice of their life before it changes once again.
Storytelling images are perfect for family photography, each image works as part of a wider narrative, so when you look back through the gallery, it feels like reliving a memory rather than simply viewing a set of portraits. Storytelling photography still values beauty and composition, but the priority is meaning and connection. The photographs are created to feel honest, emotional, and personal to your family, rather than staged or interchangeable.
Why Documentary Maternity Photography Matters
Documentary maternity sessions are about preserving connection rather than perfection. Especially with toddlers, the magic often happens in movement, the running, exploring, cuddling, and spontaneous moments that unfold naturally when families are given space to simply enjoy time together.
I hope that years from now, these photographs won’t just remind this family what they looked like, it’ll take them right back to this day and this moment in time.
Beach Sessions with Young Children
Beach sessions are perfect for young families because they allow children the freedom to play and explore. There’s no pressure to sit still or smile at the camera. Instead, the focus stays on connection and shared experience.
Whether it’s climbing rocks, collecting shells, chasing waves, or cuddling together, these moments create photographs that feel honest and timeless.
We are so fortunate on our North Coast to have some naturally breath-taking beaches including the Whiterocks, Portrush (where this session was held), Portstewart Strand, Downhill Beach, Castlerock, Portballintrae, really pretty much anywhere along the Causeway Coast is stunning!
