Why Unposed Photography is Perfect for Families

Family photography Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland

Looking for a family photographer around the north coast?  Read on to find out why my unposed documentary style of photography might be exactly what your family needs.

I don’t know how your mornings go but in my house, with two littles under three, getting everyone dressed and out of the house is a challenge in itself! I really don’t need to add to my stress levels by making them perform for a camera.

But what if your family photography session didn’t feel stressful at all?

What if, instead, you actually got to spend some quality time enjoying each other?

Posed vs Documentary Style Sessions: What’s the Difference?

Traditional posed photography has its place. It’s polished, structured, and often focused on everyone looking their “best” at the same time. You are guided to sit, stand, and look a certain way. These can be truly beautiful images.

Natural documentary family photography is however, something entirely different.

A family session of mine looks more like:

  • Your child running straight for the sea before you’ve even unpacked.

  • Building a sandcastle and searching for the perfect shells to decorate it.

  • Ice cream covered fingers and wind in your hair.

  • Warming up tiny toes and hands after a dip in the Atlantic!

This style of photography aims to observe rather than interfere. To tell the story of your family without pretence. To capture emotions, connections and subtle family dynamics.

As the years go by we have the privilege of watching our little ones grow and their unique personalities come to light. My images aim to showcase everything you know and love about your family. Every family tells a different story and no two sessions will be the same.

Why Everyone Feels More Relaxed (Yes, Even You)

One of the biggest shifts families notice in unposed documentary style photography sessions is how easy it feels.

There’s no pressure to perform. You don’t need matching outfits, props or fancy backdrops. No underlying anxiety about the toddler that may or may not have a meltdown, the baby that will 100% need fed, the teenager that wants to be anywhere but in front of the camera. We don’t even need the dog to follow commands! I can’t get my kids to sit still and I don’t expect yours to either!

I encourage you to chose a location on the north coast that you are already familiar with, one that you love. We have an amazing selection of outdoor locations on our doorstep, think the Whiterocks Portrush, Somerset Forest in Coleraine, Garvagh Forest, Downhill beach Castlerock and Portstewart strand, to name just a few! Or for some deeply personal memories choose your very own home and garden.

From these familiar spots, you are already comfortable so it’s easy to let the session unfold naturally. Some of my best sessions simply follow along your usual routine, taking the dog for a walk and watching the kids run up and down the sand dunes or a quiet day at home playing with toys and reading stories.

My sessions are informal, relaxed and movement-based. I’ll give you just enough direction so you feel comfortable, but I’ll also step back to let things unfold naturally. These small prompts help create beautiful compositions while still keeping everything authentic and natural.

Why the Everyday Matters More Than You Think

It’s easy to assume that family photos need to be taken on special days. But here’s the truth, the moments you’ll treasure most are the ones that feel ordinary right now. That’s where the love lives.

Think about:

  • Flour-covered hands while baking in your kitchen

  • Muddy wellies after walking the dog in the forest

  • Wrapping your child in a towel after paddling in the sea

  • Bedtime stories with cosy pyjamas and all the teddies

These are the moments that make up the very fabric of your family’s story. They may not feel extraordinary today but years from now, they’ll be everything. The days are long but the years are short as they say, and they will never be this little again.

The house doesn’t need to be renovated, the garden doesn’t need to be tidy, you don’t need to buy new outfits or get your hair done. You just need to book the session!
