A Beach Family Photography Session with Baby Isla, Samson & Jura

For many families, a photo session wouldn't feel complete without including every member of the family, including the ones with four legs, even the really big ones!

This beach session was a wonderful example of that.

On a beautiful day by the coast, I joined Katie, Nick, their baby daughter Isla, and their two magnificent Great Danes, Samson and Jura, for a relaxed family photography session. With stunning views, plenty of cuddles, and two incredibly patient dogs, it was the perfect afternoon to document this season of family life.

A Walk Along the Beach

Rather than focusing on posed photographs, we spent most of the session simply walking together along the shoreline.

The family were beautifully dressed, but the atmosphere remained relaxed and natural. There was no rush and no pressure, just time spent together enjoying the fresh air and coastal views.

These walks often create some of the most meaningful photographs. Parents naturally interact with their children, conversations happen, hands are held, and little moments unfold without needing any direction.

As we wandered up and down the beach, Isla took in the world around her while Samson and Jura happily accompanied the family on their adventure waiting for the moment they could be set free to run!

Time for Isla to Explore

Partway through the session, we stopped for a little while on the sand to let Isla explore.

One of my favourite things about photographing babies is watching their curiosity at work. Everything is new, every texture is worth investigating, and every discovery feels exciting.

The beach offered plenty for Isla to experience, from the feel of the sand beneath her hands to the sounds and movement all around her.

These moments of exploration are often the heart of documentary family photography. Rather than asking children to perform for the camera, I simply document them experiencing the world in their own way.

Samson and Jura Steal a Few Moments Too

Of course, no blog about this session would be complete without mentioning Samson and Jura.

Including dogs in family photography sessions can sometimes be unpredictable, but these two were absolute stars.

For a few moments during the session, they patiently practiced staying seated while I moved around them with the camera, capturing the family together. Their calm presence added so much to the photographs and reflected just how important they are within this family's story.

Family photographs should include the people, and pets, that matter most.

Cuddles, Connection and Real Moments

Some of my favourite photographs from the session came during the quieter moments.

Dad shared cuddles with Isla before spending a little time with his beloved dogs. Mum and Isla shared plenty of laughs, smiles, and affectionate moments together as they enjoyed the afternoon.

Family Photography That Tells Your Story

Looking through this gallery, what stands out most isn't the location or even the beautiful scenery. It's the relationships.

A happy little family enjoying an afternoon together. Parents soaking up time with their daughter. Two loyal dogs included in the memories. Moments of laughter, cuddles, curiosity, and connection.

These are the photographs that become more meaningful with every passing year.

Because family photography isn't really about perfect smiles or perfect behaviour.

It's about remembering who was there, what life felt like, and the people, and pets, you loved most during this chapter of your story.
