A Rainy Day Family Photography Session at Home in Coleraine
Family Photography at Home in Coleraine | Documentary Family Session Northern Ireland | Causeway Coast Family Photographer |
When people imagine a family photo session, they often picture perfect weather, beautiful light, and everyone dressed in matching outfits.
This family session in Coleraine was none of those things, and that's exactly why I loved it. I contacted Lauren a few days before our session to say I had been keeping an eye on the weather and it looked like it was going to be 100% rain.
I suggested that an at-home session would likely suit better but Lauren was already a step ahead and had planned for an at home session at home whatever the weather, after all, we live in our homes year round no matter the forecast!
So instead of worrying about the rain, this family embraced it. Waterproofs were pulled on, wellies were found, and we spent the morning documenting a normal day together at home. No special outfits, no planned activities, and no pressure to perform for the camera.
Just a family spending time together exactly as they always do.
Starting the Session in the Garden
Despite the drizzle, we began outside in the garden, where the children wasted no time getting stuck into their favourite activities.
The family's little girl and her younger brother happily moved between the swings, slide, bikes, and playhouse, completely unfazed by the weather. In fact, the rain seemed to add to the fun.
One of the lovely things about documentary family photography is watching children lead the way. Rather than directing them into poses, I simply followed along as they explored the spaces that make up their everyday world.
There were races on bikes, adventures in the playhouse, and quieter moments checking on the vegetables growing in the garden. These are the kinds of activities that probably happen most days for this family, but they're also the moments that tell the story of childhood.
Real Life Makes the Best Photographs
As a documentary family photographer, I'm always looking for connection rather than perfection.
Children don't need to sit still or smile at the camera for meaningful photographs to happen. Some of the best moments come when they're fully absorbed in play and completely unaware of being photographed.
That's exactly what happened during this session.
The children were free to run, climb, investigate, and imagine. Mum joined in naturally, helping, encouraging, and sharing in the fun. The result was a collection of photographs that genuinely reflected what family life looks like right now.
Finishing Indoors
As the session came to an end, we headed inside for a few final moments.
The change of pace felt perfect after the energy of the garden. Indoors, the children settled into their usual routines, playing together and enjoying the familiar comfort of home.
These quieter photographs often become some of my favourites. They capture the little details that can so easily be forgotten with time.
Why Choose an At-Home Family Photography Session?
Many families worry that their home isn't interesting enough for a photo session.
The truth is that your home is already filled with meaning.
It's where your children spend their days, where favourite toys live, where muddy wellies are left by the door, and where countless memories are being made.
Documentary family photography isn't about creating a perfect version of family life. It's about preserving the season you're living in right now.
This family's session in Coleraine was a perfect example of that. Rainy weather, garden adventures, everyday play, and a few quiet moments indoors. Nothing extraordinary on the surface, yet full of the moments that matter most.
And years from now, those ordinary moments will likely be the memories they treasure most of all.
