Rain never really needs to be an excuse to stay indoors, especially when you're two and three years old and there's a garden waiting to be explored!
I spent a lovely afternoon with this family in Coleraine, documenting life at home for this brother and sister duo! Both dressed in their waterproofs, they headed straight out into the garden, completely unfazed by the rain. I could tell this was just a normal day for these two and my presence didn’t make a dent!
There was a swing to play on, a slide to whizz down and a playhouse to explore. They stopped to look at the flowers, checked how their vegetables were getting on and pottered about doing all the important things that make up a small person's day.
Making the most of the garden
I love sessions like this because there's no need to come up with a list of activities or keep the children entertained. They already know exactly what they want to do. I just followed along.
The garden was full of little things to keep them busy, and I spent my time quietly photographing it all as it happened. Their games, their little interactions and all the things they probably do every day without giving them a second thought.
Then the hose came out. What started as an attempt to clean their bikes soon turned into something else entirely. There was water spraying everywhere, plenty of splashing and, before long, two very soggy children! They were having the best time.
Just letting children be children
This is exactly the kind documentary family photography I want to do more of.
At two and three, there's so much happening in their little worlds. Everything is interesting, everything needs investigating and the simplest things can provide hours of entertainment. I love seeing what stories naturally unfold.
A rainy afternoon in the garden might not seem like anything particularly extraordinary at the time. But these are the things I want families to remember.
The way they played together, how much they loved being outside and just how little they were.
Family photography at home in Coleraine and across the Causeway Coast
If you're thinking about booking a family photography session, you don't need to wait for a sunny day or plan a big family adventure.
Your home and garden are more than enough.
As a documentary family photographer based on the North Coast of Northern Ireland, I photograph families in their own homes and familiar surroundings, capturing the things that happen day to day. Whether that's playing in the garden, making a mess in the kitchen or heading out for a rainy-day adventure, it's all part of your family's story.
I photograph families in Coleraine, Portrush, Portstewart, Ballymoney, Garvagh, Kilrea and beyond throughout the Causeway Coast and Northern Ireland.
No need to coordinate outfits, no staging and no pressure for the children to do anything but be themselves.
If you'd like me to document your family at home, I'd love to hear from you.
