Rosie’s Farm: A Documentary Family Photography Session

When people think about family photo sessions, they often imagine perfect weather, beautiful sunsets and carefully planned locations. But some of my favourite sessions are the ones that simply follow the rhythm of a family's real life.

This session with Mum, Dad and their ten-month-old daughter Rosie was a perfect example.

Their family farm in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, provided the backdrop for a morning filled with exploration, cuddles and everyday moments. With calves and cows nearby and two family dogs eager to join in, there was no shortage of things for Rosie to discover.

At this age the world is full of wonder. Every animal, every sound and every new experience is worth investigating. We spent time wandering around the farm, letting Rosie take everything in while Mum and Dad enjoyed watching her curiosity unfold. These are often the moments I love most during family sessions, the interactions that happen naturally when nobody is trying too hard.

The family dogs made several appearances throughout the session, happily following us around as we explored and making sure they got their cuddles too! Including pets in your family photographs is always something I encourage where possible. They are such an important part of family life, and their presence helps tell the full story of this season.

As is often the case in Northern Ireland, the weather had other plans. Just as we were settling into life outdoors, the rain arrived. But rather than seeing it as a setback, we simply moved indoors and continued documenting the family's morning together.

In many ways, this is where the session truly came to life.

Inside, Rosie played with her toys, explored her surroundings and enjoyed some quieter moments with her parents. The pace slowed and everyone settled into the comfort of home.

For me the standout image from the entire session, the one that instantly became my favourite, was a simple moment on the sofa.

Rosie sat between her mum and dad while they read a story together.

No looking at the camera. No posing. No instructions.

Just a little girl completely absorbed in a book, tucked safely between the two people she loves most. Just Guess How Much I Love You.

It's the kind of photograph that might seem ordinary today, but years from now it will tell such an important story. It captures not only what Rosie looked like at ten months old, but also what family life felt like during this fleeting stage.

Those everyday routines, reading books, playing with toys, cuddling on the sofa, often become the memories we treasure most.

This session is a reminder that family photography doesn't require perfect conditions. We don't need endless sunshine or elaborate locations. Sometimes all we need is a place that means something to you and a willingness to embrace whatever the day brings.

Whether that's exploring a family farm, checking on your calves, or reading stories on the sofa while the rain falls outside, these are the moments that deserve to be remembered.

Because one day, the cows may still be there, the dogs may have grown older, and Rosie may be reading books all by herself. But these photographs will bring everyone back to exactly how it felt to be here, right now.
