A Whiterocks Beach Maternity Session with Freddie the Dog

There is something so special about photographing couples as they prepare to become parents for the very first time.

Everything feels exciting, a little uncertain and completely life-changing all at once. The conversations are filled with anticipation, the plans are still being made and every little kick is a reminder that their world is about to change forever.

This maternity session at Whiterocks Beach captured exactly that feeling.

Joined by their much-loved dog Freddie, these soon-to-be parents spent an evening soaking up the final weeks before their family grew from three to four.

As with all my maternity sessions the focus was about creating space for genuine moments to unfold naturally.

We began (and continued for some time!) with one of Freddie's favourite activities: a game of fetch on the beach. As he bounded across the sand with endless enthusiasm, his owners laughed and watched him explore. Including dogs in maternity sessions is always something I love. They are often the first baby of the family and an important part of this chapter of life.

One of my favourite moments came when Mum-to-be wandered down to the shoreline for a paddle in the sea. The evening light reflected across the water while she enjoyed a quiet moment, taking in the final days of pregnancy before the adventure of parenthood begins. Little did she know furbaby Freddie had plans to photobomb as he ran to catch his ball!

Throughout the session there were plenty of laughs as the couple chatted about everything that lay ahead. The sleepless nights, the first milestones, the excitement of finally meeting their baby and all the unknowns that come with becoming parents for the first time.

Those conversations created some of the most meaningful images of the evening. Not because they were looking at the camera, but because they were completely focused on one another and the future they were building together.

We also spent some time simply slowing down.

Hands resting gently on the bump. Waiting for movement. Smiling when a kick could be felt beneath the surface.

These quiet moments are often the ones parents remember most vividly. The moments before they knew exactly who their baby would be, but already loved them completely.

As the morning session drew to a close, we settled onto the sand while Freddie continued his own adventure nearby, investigating every scent and distraction the beach had to offer.

The couple sat together, watching the sea and reflecting on what was to come.

No elaborate posing. No complicated direction.

Just two people on the edge of a huge new chapter, enjoying a peaceful moment together before everything changes.

That is what I love most about maternity photography.

It's not simply about documenting a bump. It's about capturing the anticipation, the connection, the excitement and the little in-between moments that can so easily be forgotten once life becomes wonderfully busy with a newborn.

Whiterocks Beach provided the perfect backdrop for this session, but the real story wasn't the location. It was the laughter, the conversations, the quiet moments of connection and Freddie's joyful presence throughout it all.

A beautiful reminder that before they became Mummy and Daddy, they were simply two people waiting to meet the little person who would change their lives forever. Agh I am so excited for the adventures this wee family is going to have!
